Om Namah Shivaya (ॐ नमः शिवाय) is the mantra dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is one of the most important mantras in Shaivism and equally powerful Hindu Mantra. This Om Namah Shivaya mantra literally goes back to thousands of years and is mentioned in Yajurveda in the Shri Rudram hymn.

Om Namah Shivaya was the mantra that Bhagavan Nityananda imparted to Baba Muktananda on the morning of divya diksha, of his divine initiation, on August 15, 1947. The words Om Namah Shivaya mean “Om. I honor Shiva, the auspicious one, the supreme Self.” Though Baba had repeated this mantra since childhood, it was through shaktipat initiation, through Bhagavan Nityananda’s grace, that Baba experienced the mantra’s true meaning: that he was one with Shiva—the supreme Self, the divine source of all existence. Baba and Gurumayi have imparted Om Namah Shivaya as the mantra of initiation to countless seekers around the world. Infused with the grace of the Guru, the mantra is chaitanya, alive with the power of Consciousness. It has the power to still the mind and awaken us to our own divinity. A beautiful and fitting way to honor the anniversary of Baba’s divya diksha is to chant Om Namah Shivaya.
